About EG Music Department

The Elk Grove High School Music Department is under the direction of Mario Hufana Sebastian. The EGHS Music Department has won prestigious awards all over California and is the first high school of the Elk Grove Unified School District. The performing ensembles have earned Excellent and Superior ratings at festivals, competitions, participates in numerous community events. They host the annual NCBA Winter Herd Review with winter percussion, winter guard, and drum major competition. This is one of the largest NCBA winter competitions in the Sacramento region. EGHS Music is also known for their annual Rock Out Loud show helping students to produce and organize a professional rock concert. The Symphonic Band was one of the chosen ensembles in the state to perform at the New York International Music Festival at Carnegie Hall on April 7, 2015.  

The Marching Band and Guard has travelled to Carson City and was selected by the Marines & NFL to perform for the Semper Fidelis All American Bowl 2013. In 2010 they travelled to San Diego in December participating in the invitational HOLIDAY BOWL parade and ½ time show featured on ESPN. The Marching Band and Choir has been a part of the Disney magic with Disney Magic Music Days performing in Disneyland. They have been awarded 2008 & 2009 Best Marching Band Guard for Sacramento Magazine, Best Marching Band for 2009, 2010, & 2011 Best of Elk Grove Magazine, and Best Marching Band & Guard 2011 for Sacramento News and Review. The music department has performed for Best of Sacramento Celebration to help raise contributions for the March of Dimes.


About the Director

Mario H. Sebastian, Director of Music Elk Grove High School, was born in the Philippines and came to the United States of America in 1983. He graduated from California State University Sacramento and holds a Bachelor of Music Performance degree in percussion and holds his teaching credential in music education. At Elk Grove High School, he teaches Jazz Band, Beginning Guitar, Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Marching Band, Guard, and Choir.   Before Elk Grove High School his past teaching career was the Percussion & Assistant Director at Granite Bay High School Band, Choir and Band Director at Glen Edwards Middle School, and was Band Director at Warren T. Eich Intermediate.   Mario is a percussionist for local bands and has played orchestral/world percussion for the Sacramento Choral Society, Sacramento Masters Singers, Sacramento Philharmonic, Boston Pops Orchestra (SCS Tour), Sacramento Ballet, and Music Circus Broadway Series. Mario was awarded “Outstanding New Band Director of the Year in 2006 from Northern California Band Association (NCBA).  In 2010, Mr. Sebastian was selected as guest conductor for the Western Slopes Honor Band. READ MORE
