Career Center News
- The next parent/student meeting of the 2010 Historically Black College and University Tour is Thursday, March 11, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. in the Valley High School's multipurpose room. In order for district students to participate in the HBCU tour, it is required that they attend the parent/student orientation meetings. Currently there are still 5 seats available so feel free to invite a friend to join along.

- PRACTICE TAKING FOR THE SATs. Offered Saturdays 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. January 9, February 6, March 6, April 3, May 1 and June 5, 2010 in the West Meeting Room of the Central Library 828 I St, Sacramento, CA 95814. Prepare for the SATs by practicing with a real SAT test under real test conditions! Kaplan Test Prep will administer a practice test on the dates listed. - SAT Test Secrets 101. Offered Tuesday 6 p.m. - 7 p.m. January 12, February 9, March 9, April 6, May 4, and June 8, 2010. Learn to score higher on the SAT using key Kaplan test taking strategies. This workshop is open to students who took the SAT the previous Saturday (test results will be available), their parents, and anyone else interested in improving their test scores. Sacramento Region Community Foundation. DEADLINES VARY, CHECK OFTEN. The Sacramento Region Community Foundation administers a number of scholarships. Each scholarship fund has it s own unique criteria for selecting recipients, including academic achievement, finanacial need, educational and career goals, community involvement and ethnic background. The Sacramento Chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility 2010 Scholarship Essay Contest. DEADLINE MARCH 10, 2010. Open to high school seniors in Sacramento and surrounding counties. Must submit an orignial essay of 500 words or fewer describing your thoughts on the Native American saying, "We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children." Eta Gamma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. DEADLINE MARCH 12, 2010. Students must submit the application with the following information: an official transcript, two letters of recommendation (one from school personnel and one from an individual in the community), a letter stating future aspirations, parents' W-2 or tax return and a recent picture. Air Force Association Chapter #116 2010 College Scholarship Program. DEADLINE MARCH 13, 2010. Open to high school seniors in the Sacramento area, with a minimum GPA of 3.0, minimum SAT score of 1800 or minimum ACT score of 22, applying to four year college or university as a full time student starting in fall 2010 and pursuing a four year degree or course of study related to aerospace studies, such as science, technology, engineering or mathematics. Italian Catholic Federation Scholarship. DEADLINE MARCH 15, 2010. Open to high school seniors who are Roman Catholic and of Italian descent (or whose non-Italian Roman Catholic parents or grandparents are members of the Federation), who have a GPA of at least 3.2 and live within the Roman Catholic Dioceses of California, Nevada, Illinois and Arizona. Jack and Jill of America, Inc. DEADLINE MARCH 15, 2010. Open to all graduating African-American high school seniors. Cabrillo Civic Clubs of California, Inc. DEADLINE MARCH 15, 2010. Open to students of Portuguese descent on father's or mother's side, be a U.S. citizen and have a minimum GPA of 3.5. For full details and an application please see Mrs. Vicari in the Career Center.
VIP Women in Technology Scholarship Program. DEADLINE MARCH 15, 2010. to be eligible, a student must be enrolled at. or accepted into, either a two or four year college or university within the United States for the 2010 school year. These individuals must be planning a career in information technology or related field. Student must have earned a cumulative 3.0 GPA, submit an essay of 1,000 words or less on a specific problem you see in community and have participated in community service or extra curricular activities. Kosmos Civic Club, Inc. DEADLINE MARCH 15, 2010. Open to graduation high school seniors. Must include a minimum 500 word essay that includes financial need statement as well as extra curricular activities, community service, goals and aspirations to succeed. Sutterville Optimist Oratorical Contest. CONTEST DATE MARCH 18, 2010. Topic: "Cyber Communication: Progress or Problem?". Department of Human Assistance Scholarship Program. DEADLINE MARCH 19, 2010. Open to graduating high school seniors, must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident and a resident of Sacramento County, must be entering a two- or four-year accredited college, university, or technical, trade school, must have a a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and must be on public assistance or low income. National coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc. High School Scholarship. DEADLINE MARCH 22, 2010. Open to high school seniors, have a minimum GPA of 2.5, identify financial need and write and essay entitled "My Life - My Goals". For full details and to download an application visit www.ncbwasac.org .
Sacramento Association of REALTORS. DEADLINE MARCH 31, 2010. Open to high school seniors with a GPA of at least 3.5, are legal residents of Sacramento County or the City of West Sacramento for at least one year or be the relative of past or present SAR member and have a valid CA driver's license or ID card. Les Belles Artes Club, Inc. DEADLINE APRIL 1, 2010. Scholarship for the arts. Visual: sculpture, painting, graphics, photography, design, and architecture. Performing: drama, music, dance. Writing: all kinds including music composition. See Mrs. Vicari in the Career Center for an application.
Amador, Wl Dorado, Sacramento Cattle Women Scholarship. DEADLINE APRIL 1, 2010. Open to graduation high school seniors in Amador, El Dorado and Sacramento Counties. Must have a minimum GPA of 2.5. For more information and an application please see Mrs. Vicari in the Career Center.
Sacramento Area Fire Fighters, Local 522 is offering four (4) $500 scholarships to high school students who will be attending college the year following graduation and who attend high school within the boundaries of the areas served by SAFF Local 522. Two scholarships will be awarded to daughters/sons of Local 522 members and two scholarships will be awrded to students who attend one of the high schools within Local 522's jurisdiction. Each applicant must submit a 500 work essay on the topic "Life in the Firehouse Between Emergency Calls." DEADLINE APRIL 1, 2010. Applications are available in the Career Center.
American Slavic Social Hall Club. DEADLINE APRIL 1, 2010. The American Slavic Social Hall Club is sponsoring a $1,000.00 scholarship for a high school senior whose ancestry is of the country formerly know as Yugoslavia. Applicants must be U.S. citizen and attend an accredited high school within a twenty-five mile radius of Sacramento. To be eligible to apply a student must have a a 3.5 GPA or higher, plan to enroll in a full-time college program, submit two letters of recommendation a transcript, and an autobiographical essay of at least two hunderd and fifty words. SAFE Credit Union. DEADLINE APRIL 5, 2010. SAFE Credit Union will award ten scholarships in the of $1,000.00 each to exceptional college-bound seniors from high schools in the greater Sacramento area. Qualified applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or better. All applications will be judged on the following criteria: academic achievement, financial need, a personal statement, letters of recommendation and community involvement. Civil Service Employees Insurance Company's Youth Automobile Safety Scholarship. DEADLINE APRIL 5, 2010. Must be a California, Arizona or Nevada resident attending his or her senior year of high school. Applicant must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, been accepted to an accredited two- or four-year college or university, or trade school in the United States with intent to enroll as a full-time freshman by the Fall 2010 session. The applicants parent or legal guardian must be currently employed full-time by - or if retired or deceased, must have been employed full-time by - a government entity. This includes but is not limited to, peace officers, firefighters, educators, postal employees, military personnel and federal, state and local government workers. Knights of Columbus, Mosignor Raymond Renwald Council #7241. DEADLINE APRIL 8, 2010. Open to graduating high school seniors and an active parishioner of St. Joseph's Parish in Elk Grove for use at a certified vocational or trade school or a private or public 2-year or 4-year academic institution. Four (4) scholarships of $500 will be awarded. Selection emphasis will be on level of faith, in addition to academics and other activities. Family and Consumer Science Related Careers Student Scholarship. DEADLINE APRIL 12, 2010. The North and North Central District of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences are offering three scholarships ($300.00 each) to high school seniors to be used during 2010-2011. These scholarships are to be awarded to students pursuing career studies in any related Family and Consumer Science field (Consumer Science, Child Development, Food Science, Dietetics and Nutrition, Family and Consumer Science Education, Food Service and Hospitality, Fashion Design, Interior Design and Furnishings) at an accredited Community college or Technical, Vocational Institution. African American Telecommunication Professionals of ATT. DEADLINE APRIL 15, 2010. Open to African American seniors who will be enrolling in an accredited 4-year college or two-year community college or accredited business school. Must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and write an essay on Lewis Howard Latimer or How My Education Will Benefit My Community. Please come to the Career Center for full details and an application.
County of Sacramento Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Caucus Scholarship. DEADLINE APRIL 20, 2010. Open to LGBT high school seniors graduating in 2010, who is are Sacramento County residents, enrolling or expect to be enrolled in an accredited college, university, technical or trade school for fall 2010 and have a GPA of at least 2.5. 2010 Student-View Scholarship Program. DEADLINE APRIL 22, 2010. The 2010 Student-View Scholarship Program is offering $8,000 worth of scholarships to high school seniors who plan to attend a four-year college, community/junior college or career school. It's quick and easy to apply. No minimum SAT/ACT score or GPA, no essay required, no lenghty application forms and no application fees. A.W. Bodine-Sunkist Memorial Scholarship. DEADLINE APRIL 30, 2010. This scholarship was established in memory of Arthur W. Bodine, a distinguished drector of Sunkist Growers and a respected agrilcultural leader, to provide funds for undergraduate students from agriculcultural backgrounds who are in need of financial assistance to further their educations. Golden Gate Testaurant Association Scholarship Foundation. DEADLINE APRIL 30, 2010. Last year the foundation awarded $50,500 in scholarships to students enrolled in culinary and hospitatlity mangement programs. American Fire Sprinkler Association Scholarship Program. Deadline May 3, 2010. Open to high school seniors in the United States who are U.S. citizens or legal residents. Application consists of reading an essay about automatic fire sprinklers, completing registration and answering a ten-question multilple choice test. www.afsascholarship.org
First US Community Credit Union Scholarship. DEADLINE MAY 24, 2010. Open to graduating high school seniors with a GPA of at least 3.0 and are a First U.S. Community Credit Union member in good standing. For full details and to download an application visit www.firstus.org
Sarah A. Bonnifield Vietnam Veterans Scholarship Fund. DEADLINE MAY 31, 2010. The scholarship amount will vary but will be at least $1,000. MUST be a Vietnam Veteran or a dependent or relative of a Vietnam Veteran. See Mrs. Vicari for details on how to apply.
Vietnam Veterans of America Sacramento Valley's Chapter 500. DEADLINE JULY 1, 2010. Vietnam Veterans of American, Chapter 500 will be awarding scholarships in the amount of $500. MUST be a dependent or relative of a Vietnam Era Veteran (January 1, 1959- May 7, 1975). See Mrs. Vicari for details of how to apply.

The Stanford Medical Youth Science Program is looking for economically disadvantaged and under-represented sophomore and junior students who are academically oriented, mature and inquisitive, interested in science, health and medicine careers, and are going to be the first in their family to attend a college or university.
